The American Public Works Association continues to regard diversity in all areas of public life as the utmost importance in ensuring its growth and vitality. The Diversity Committee was created in 1995 to promote the belief that all should be made to feel included as part of the whole and that diversity awareness is essential to the continued growth and vitality of the APWA, both in the workforce and as a membership organization.
As our chapter and industry matures we are facing extraordinary levels of retirements in the next ten years and we must start building for the future. We are all familiar with the population trends facing our region and we must act on it. The Diversity Committee will be launching two new initiatives to provide career opportunities.

Initiative I - DIVERSITY SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (DSIP):
Summer Internships – It is important we build relationships with future employees while they are still in school. By creating a VA/MD/DC APWA Diversity Summer Internship Program (DSIP), we can provide numerous mentoring opportunities for our future employees.
How does the internship work – Each member department within the Chapter will sponsor one summer internship. The committee will solicit colleges and universities to promote the program and placement opportunities.
What the department does – Submit the AGENCY INTERNSHIP APPLICATION (PDF LINK) with the following:
• Start and finish dates for the internship
• Hourly pay
• Area of work (engineering, accounting, wastewater etc.)
• Location
• Contact information
• Year of study
• Major and minor desired
Application process/recruitment – We will inform the Colleges & Universities of the Diversity Program by sending a list of opportunities. The applicants will be instructed to send the completed STUDENT INTERNSHIP APPLICATION (PDF LINK) to the Committee and we will forward to the departmental contact. Furthermore, we will track the number of Diversity Internships available, placements and report out at the annual meeting.

Initiative II – DIVERSITY MENTORSHIP PROGRAM (DMP):
By matching students with a working Public Works professional, they will get first-hand experience on a potential career. This will enhance career advancement opportunities for current members. We would also like to establish a Diversity Mentoring Program (DMP).
How does it work – DMP candidates submit an MENTOR APPLICATION (PDF LINK) to the Diversity Committee stating their career goals and aspirations. The Diversity Committee solicits senior level managers who are interested in participating in the mentoring program. The Diversity Committee will match the candidate’s career goals with a mentor.
Expectations of the DMP Candidate – Candidates will complete the DMP application and develop a relationship with the mentor through emails, lunches, conferences and phone conversations. The candidate is responsible for contributing to a developmental plan and meeting milestones as outlined by the mentor.
Expectations of the DMP Mentor – Mentors must make themselves available to mentor the candidate, assist with the preparation of a developmental plan, provide feedback and evaluations over the course of the year.
